Why a State Yarn Council?
Do you feel passionate about your needlecraft?
Embroidery, knitting, crochet, tatting, weaving, spinning,
felting, rug making, beading, needlepoint, papermaking -
anything using a needle or fiber is what we're interested in
sustaining and promoting to Alaskans. But how can we
do that?
There are many individual guilds and needlework groups to
choose from in Alaska. They all offer events, classes
and guest teachers, as well as companionship and
inspiration. But what if there were a cohesive unit,
dedicated to fundraising, supporting the guilds, and
bringing the needlearts to a whole new generation?
There is now - the Alaska State Yarn Council (ASYC).
What We Do
Every fall we sponsor
Yarn Expo, an educational conference
featuring two days of classes and a huge, one-day Vendor
Market. We bring teachers, vendors, authors, and needleworkers together to learn more about their particular
interest, new products, and to meet other enthusiasts from
all over the state and beyond.
We raise money through Yarn Expo, grants, and membership
funds. This money is available, as funds allow, to guilds in the form
of grants which can be used to pay for instructors and
materials to meet their missions.
Scholarships and grants will be available to individual
Alaskans for travel and tuition to further their education
of a needlearts discipline.
